Ready for a run through about the basics of biology? Then this course is for you! This Gooroo live seminar will introduce you to some foundational concepts in biology. Starting off with investigating why we ought to study life, this course covers an overview of cell biology, then will get you acquainted with genetics, and ends with microbiology. By the end of this course, you will be familiar with how genes influence phenotypes and why viruses and bacteria make us sick. Join us live to catch up or get ahead and familiarize yourself before your first class.
- Instructor: Shannon M.
Hi, I'm Shannon. I am a second year PhD student in Biology at MIT, and I earned my BS in Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2018. I love general chemistry and since high school have taken it three times at three different levels, and have tutored it since I was a freshman in college. I have found that when students are struggling in more advanced material in a subject, it is usually because they are shaky on a foundational topic. I have no problem taking the time to identify what that topic is and working with the student to master that first.

Lesson 1: Why should we study living things? (60 min)
Mon, August 10 @ 6:00 PM
In our first session, we will start with an introduction to the study of life and start with answering why we study biology. We will also go over a quick overview of the topics we will cover in order to kick start our learning!
Lesson 2: Cells are diverse and complex (60 min)
Tue, August 11 @ 6:00 PM
In our second session, we will cover the what cells need to do to survive, and how diverse cells have different functions. We will also look into the basics of organelles and use exercises to understand how cell types differ across tissues.
Lesson 3: The Roadmap of the Cell (60 min)
Wed, August 12 @ 6:00 PM
Ever wonder about the central dogma of biology? In this session we will cover all you need to know about DNA, RNA and protein! We will also discuss how DNA and RNA are used to create proteins.
Lesson 4: Easy as ATGC: Key concepts in genetics (60 min)
Thu, August 13 @ 6:00 PM
This session is all about hacking the genetic code that makes us, us. Ever wonder how we get certain characteristics? Or why do we look the way we do? This lesson will aim to answer your questions! We will be looking into genetics, and how our genes influence phenotypes. We will also briefly discuss what is genetic engineering.
lesson 5: Viruses, bacteria, parasites, oh my! (60 min)
Fri, August 14 @ 6:00 PM
As our final lesson, we will be taking a look at microbiology and how microbes interact with our immune system. In this session we will look to understanding why microbes make us sick. This class may be beneficial in explaining the reasons why we catch colds.
