The Bible: Stepping Back to Go Forward

Grade: 8-12

Can something that was written thousands of years ago make a difference in your life today? Come join me in this five-part course where I share about my spiritual and religious journey, a strange winding road that eventually reached the doors of Christianity. Through sharing personal stories and quotes taken from the Bible, I try to make a case for how Christianity is relevant to life today but can be misunderstood.

Hi! I'm Caton, I’ve been a tutor for students from around the world since high school. I am from Charlottesville, Virginia, but I moved around a lot growing up, spending half my life overseas in Hong Kong. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Princeton University in 2020, and I'm currently taking a gap year to serve my church before starting fulltime work as a management consultant. My favorite part of tutoring is helping students to build confidence and think outside of the box while exploring their personal passions.

Course Outline

  1. Lesson 1: Christianity Today (60 min)

    Tue, September 15 @ 3:00 PM

    Eastern Time

Christianity is everywhere in today’s western world. The concept of Christianity has latched onto so many social and political matters, to the point where the heart of the religion and practice itself has become faded. Come join us in this first lesson where we note these social and political issues and adjust our minds to understand how this course will center itself amidst these concerns.

  2. Lesson 2: What is the Bible? (60 min)

    Thu, September 17 @ 3:00 PM

    Eastern Time

What is the Bible, and why should we care about it more than any other old book like, say Shakespeare’s writing? Join us in learning about the origins of the Bible, its long history and self-proclaimed purpose.

  3. Lesson 3: The Bible’s Personal Effect (60 min)

    Tue, September 22 @ 3:00 PM

    Eastern Time

With a background on where the Bible comes from and what it says about itself from the previous class, in this lesson we try to unpack the effects that following the Bible can have in a person’s life and direction. This class will include some of my own personal stories and experiences with learning from the Bible.

  4. Lesson 4: The Story of Jesus (60 min)

    Thu, September 24 @ 10:00 AM

    Eastern Time

Christianity is all about Jesus. People talk about Jesus all the time, but how many people really know and can feel the story of Jesus? Using the Bible, we go over the story of Jesus as it is described in the text, demystifying who this central figure in Christianity is.

  5. Lesson 5: Who is God? (60 min)

    Tue, September 29 @ 3:00 PM

    Eastern Time

What is God? Is there are a God? Are there multiple Gods? Who is God? These are all great questions that the various world religions have explored and continue explore to this day. Come hear about who Christians consider God to be in this final class.
