Pride Month embraces the wonderful diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community and being true to yourself!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-is-lgbtqia\">What is LGBTQIA+?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Wanting to move towards inclusivity, the shorter LGBT has expanded. Thus, adding new letters to represent members of the community. Keep reading to see what this acronym represents and means to Pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>L<\/strong> is for <strong>Lesbian<\/strong>. This is a female-identifying person who is attracted to another female-identifying person.<\/li><li><strong>B<\/strong> is for <strong>Bisexual<\/strong>. Someone who is attracted to more than one gender.<\/li><li><strong>G<\/strong> is for <strong>Gay<\/strong>. This is a male-identifying person who is attracted to another male-identifying person. <\/li><li><strong>T<\/strong> is for <strong>Transgender<\/strong>. This is someone whose gender identity\/expression does not conform to they sex they were assigned at birth. Having to do with gender and not sexuality, transgender people may identity as other LGBQIA+ terms.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Q <\/strong>is for <strong>Queer<\/strong> or <strong>Questioning<\/strong>. Referring to anyone who is not straight or cisgender, queer is an umbrella term in the community for those who don\u2019t wish to use labels. Historically, the term was a slur. But, recently it has been reclaimed by LGBTQIA+ people. Questioning is a term for those who are not sure about how they identify.<\/li><li><strong>I<\/strong> is for <strong>Intersex<\/strong> \u2014 referring to people who naturally have biological traits which don\u2019t match what is typically identified as male or female.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>A<\/strong> is for <strong>Asexual\/Aromantic<\/strong> or <strong>Ally<\/strong>. Another umbrella term, asexual is for those who do not experience attraction to others. Ally encompasses those who identify as cisgender and straight, but support the LGBTQIA+ community.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The expanding of identities shows how our language can evolve to encompass and represent more people.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"709\" height=\"421\" src=\"https:\/\/gooroo-blog.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2021\/05\/28152932\/yoav-hornung-_FlNNNDezuw-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2038\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gooroo-blog.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2021\/05\/28152932\/yoav-hornung-_FlNNNDezuw-unsplash.jpg 709w, https:\/\/gooroo-blog.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2021\/05\/28152932\/yoav-hornung-_FlNNNDezuw-unsplash-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-origins-of-pride\">The Origins of Pride<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pride Month honours the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stonewallfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stonewall<\/a> riots.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Occuring at the end of June in 1969, this demonstration happened at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighbourhood of NYC. Very few establishments welcomed gay people at that time because of laws against homosexuality.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to a police raid, Stonewall\u2019s patrons fought back against those imposing an anti-gay legal system. Being a catalyst for the gay liberation movement, this event is a landmark in LGBTQIA+ rights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A year after the uprising, the first gay pride marches took place in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Following this, multiple gay rights organisations formed across the US and the world. In 2016, the Stonewall National Monument took its place in NYC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officially recognised by two US Presidents, Bill Clinton in 1999 and then Barack Obama in 2009 (and every year onward) noted Pride Month.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-pioneers\">Pioneers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Marsha P. Johnson \u201cthrew the first brick\u201d at Stonewall. Among her stand other strong LGBTQIA+ pioneers such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gooroo.com\/blog\/celebrating-harvey-milk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Harvey Milk<\/a> (the first openly gay US politician) and Sylvia Rivera (a transgender activist).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"709\" height=\"472\" src=\"https:\/\/gooroo-blog.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2021\/05\/28152944\/stavrialena-gontzou-68y-oRxeY_Y-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2039\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gooroo-blog.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2021\/05\/28152944\/stavrialena-gontzou-68y-oRxeY_Y-unsplash.jpg 709w, https:\/\/gooroo-blog.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com\/2021\/05\/28152944\/stavrialena-gontzou-68y-oRxeY_Y-unsplash-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-how-pride-is-celebrated\">How Pride is Celebrated<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pride is about celebrating identities and honouring those who died for the right for this celebration. Many older community members lost countless of friends during the AIDs crisis and see Pride as a way of honouring those people. On the other hand, younger generations see Pride as a chance to fully express their identities.
