From 8 hour school days to studying and homework, students are expected to work hard and often. On top of this, colleges favour applicants that participate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gooroo.com\/blog\/college-application-process-extracurriculars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">extracurricular activities<\/a>. But, with limited hours in the day, what choices do students have? In today\u2019s blog, we\u2019ll talk about just that and why after school shouldn\u2019t be an afterthought.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-are-extracurriculars\">What are Extracurriculars?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Extracurriculars are activities performed by students that fall outside of the normal school curriculum. Often they are voluntary. However, they are also social, philanthropic, and encourage team work with peers. Usually, these after school programs are overseen by faculty leaders.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies show that being involved in extracurriculars:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Reduces the likelihood of dropping out of school.<\/li><li>Leads to a higher chance of acceptance into higher education.<\/li><li>Encourages success and achievement in school work.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Improves communication skills and self-esteem.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more, participating in these activities shows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Leadership skills.<\/li><li>Long-term commitment.&nbsp;<\/li><li>A dedication to your community.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Responsibility and time management.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, extracurriculars don\u2019t have to be sponsored by your school in order to be recognised. But, they should be community-based activities that teach you valuable skills.
