Writing<\/a> poetry is a great way to get in touch with your perception of the world around you. Whether you use a haiku format or employ a limerick rhyming scheme there are are many different ways to express yourself poetically. In today\u2019s blog, we\u2019ll look at some simple poetry writing methods. Specifically, the haiku, what it is, and how to write one.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a Haiku?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A haiku is type of short poem originating from Japan. It consists of three phrases whose words add up to a total of 17 \u201con<\/em>\u201d or sounds. The phrases are arranged in a 5, 7, 5 \u201con<\/em>\u201d pattern. Traditionally, these poems must also contain a \u201ckireji<\/em>\u201d, or cutting word to signify a sense of closure, and a \u201ckigo<\/em>\u201d, or seasonal reference. These poems do not have rhyming lines.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to Write in Haiku Format<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Haiku in English can vary in their resemblance to traditional Japanese haiku. However, they tend to stick to short concise wording, a 5-7-5 syllable\/sound pattern, a reference to nature, and a lack of rhyme.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is an example of the haiku format by Matsuo Basho (considered the greatest haiku poet):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An old silent pond\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A frog jumps into the pond,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

splash! Silence again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we count the syllables on each line we can see the 5,7,5 \u201con<\/em>\u201d pattern being utilised. We can also see that sentences can be divided between lines. What\u2019s more, there is a beginning, middle, and end to the story with the last line being a \u201csurprise\u201d ending \u2014 something we wouldn\u2019t expect.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steps for Writing \u201cSurprise-Ending\u201d Haikus<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
  1. Look out your window and describe what you see. <\/em>This will help you find your subject matter.<\/li>
  2. Focus in on a specific image and write two lines.<\/em> Don\u2019t worry about the syllable count just yet.\u00a0<\/li>
  3. Write a third line that is about something different than the first two lines.<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>
  4. Consider all three lines together.<\/em> Do they tell a story despite the surprise of the third line? Do they spark a different idea you\u2019d like to try out?<\/li>
  5. Now rewrite the poem using the 5,7,5, syllable format.<\/em> Feel free to experiment with any new ideas that come to mind.\u00a0<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    And with step 5 completed you have now written a poem in a haiku format.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Other Poetry Formats<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Of course, haiku aren\u2019t the only simple poems that exist. Here are some other poetry formats<\/a> you can try out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Limerick<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    Limericks are composed of five lines. They follow the rhyme scheme: aabba<\/em>. Where the end of all the \u201ca\u201d lines rhyme and the end of all the \u201cb\u201d lines rhyme.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Hickory, dickory, dock<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The mouse ran up the clock. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The clock struck one,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The mouse fell down,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Hickory, dickory, dock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Acrostic<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

    An acrostic poem follows this simple rule:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • The first letter of each line spell out a word if read vertically down.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      For example, let\u2019s use the word GOOROO:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      G<\/strong>reat for all your learning needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      O<\/strong>pens doors for curious students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      O<\/strong>utstanding and experienced tutors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      R<\/strong>eady to ignite your passions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      O<\/strong>perating 24\/7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
